Lesbian Hippies ROCK!

topic posted Sat, April 9, 2005 - 7:12 PM by  i like pie
hola everyone~
i just joined and i've noticed that there doesn't seem to be much activity in this tribe. but we will change that... or at least i hope so.
so to begin i will put a question on the table- what does the word hippie mean to you? what kind of physical characteristics to you think of? personality? music? anything that you associate with the word hippie.
this should be interesting....

Well, I don't really think a hippie has any specific physical characteristics. Or music, but I'm sure our tastes intersect quite a bit. One common thread for sure is that we're outsiders. Mainstream stuff doesn't hold our interest, and maybe because we're looking for something more meaningful in our lives. I don't mean we can't interact and be friends with other people who don't share our interests, just that there is often a divide there which you don't have among other hippies. Which is all pretty interesting, considering my next point. That we tend to view other people as part of the *human* race and recognize our similarities and our global role. And our role as part of the earth, not too far removed from trees and birds and elephants and squirrels. Which plays into the idea of hippies using natural products and camping/hiking, and all that fun stuff.

Oh and I must add, that not bathing and wearing dreads does NOT make one a hippie. There are far too many people like that (here in State College at least)--they lack that respect for your fellow man thing that I find pretty essential to being a true hippie, and instead (I believe) follow along because they like to smoke pot and are lazy. Nothing wrong with that, but if you want to be a "hippie" don't do things like litter and try to screw people over. *end of hippie-poser rant* ;-)

Well, I think I wrote too much, and it may not make much sense, cause I just woke up about a half an hour ago :-) But here's hopin' it does!

    Peace,

i totally hear ya. the name hippie is thrown around as often as words like liberal or christan. they can be loosely defined but there are essentials that make someone a hippie or not. the college fucks who think that they are hippies because they listen to bob and smoke pot. or because they're too lazy to shower and have dreads. douchebags. "my parents pay for my schooling and i think bush is an asshole but have no idea why and im a hippie."
      anyway... that was my rant.
      thatnks for sharing!!

im glad to see someone took initiative to start some conversation in my absence... my PC has been giving me major headaches so I have been skipping th eonline thing a lot lately.

I am glad to see a few more people here too... I started this tribe because I knew virtually no one who was both "hippie" (as a way of life, not as a fashion trend, social scene or whatever) and also gay. I always feel like I have to compromise part of who I am based on my company. Ideally it wouldnt make a difference, but it is nice to be around people with whom you share a core set of values.... any thoughts??

Hey Mamas! I totally agree with what everyone is saying about labels. Also I agree, I'm glad to have this group because I don't know anybody that fits in these two catagories. I guess technically I don't either since I'm Bi, but still.

Samantha, you're welcome here! Don't go excluding yourself based on a silly little label like that ;-) Besides, most current sexual theory says sexuality is a continuum, definitely not able to fit into three neat little categories.

Thanks Mama! I totally agree that sexuality exists on a continuum too. But man I've been in some groups where people got really upset that I wasn't a full-on lesbian. Honestly I feel like one most of the time. Hubby's not too happy about that because I guess it shows. I think I'm too conflicted for labels, LOL. :o)

I get really upset when LGBT people discriminate against our own... We have enough people against us, we don't need to turn on ourselves! And it's like, helloooo can't you see the similarities between us? It's not like it's a stretch to see... *sigh* What're ya gonna do? :-)
And whatever you feel like, hope yer happy, that's all :-) If only life were as cut and dry as the labels we give ourselves! Simpler, but maybe not so interesting ;-)
                  Peace,
                  Chrissy
